The ADA SPEC Crew Virtual Reading Labs are dynamic, Afrofuturism-centered literacy experiences where students gather each Thursday to explore powerful stories that spark imagination, identity, and critical thinking. Reading becomes an investigation in ADA S.P.E.C. Crew. Students use literature, discussion, and creative activities to analyze characters, identify patterns, make connections, and explore the STEAM ideas within a story. Weekly Open Book Time supports reading completion, while office hours give students and parents access to additional reading strategies and support. Steamchasers - 3 book series, Recommended 3rd-6th graders Teacher: Nita Payno Wednesdays, July 8-October 21 4:30–6:00pm PST The STEAM Chasers is an exciting middle-grade adventure series where a group of curious kids explore science, history, and innovation—discovering the powerful contributions of Black inventors and thinkers along the way. 4:00 pm - Open book time | Optional participation for students who need to catch up on reading. This will be teacher lead and/or audiobook read. 4:30 pm - Live class | Live reading and activities to help students study their books. 5:30 pm - Office hours | For students and parents who have questions or would like reading strategies, etc. Enrollment covers all books and book delivery charge The ADA SPEC Crew Virtual Reading Labs are dynamic, Afrofuturism-centered literacy experiences where students gather weekly to explore powerful stories that spark imagination, identity, and critical thinking. In these interactive, discussion-based labs , students don’t just read—they analyze, question, connect, and create. Whether journeying through The STEAM Chasers to uncover the legacy of Black inventors, stepping through a barbershop portal in the Future Hero series to explore courage and destiny, or diving into the magical 1920s theme park world of Odd Scholars where history and fantasy collide, scholars build reading comprehension, confidence, and cultural pride. Each lab blends guided discussion, creative response activities, and community-building to help students see themselves as thinkers, innovators, and heroes of their own story.
